what is pilates?

Joseph Pilates developed the Pilates method in the early 20th century, it was originally known as Contrology. He believed that mental and physical health were connected. The roots of his teachings are still integrated into the modern method of teaching Pilates today incorporating the principles such as control, breath, concentration, co-ordination, concentration, alignment, relaxation, breathing, centering, coordination, flowing movements and stamina.

You might have come across some Pilates exercises when seeing a health professional such as a Physiotherapist. Pilates focuses on developing good posture, correcting muscular imbalances, improving balance, increasing strength and flexibility and promoting a sense of wellness. This is achieved by slow and controlled movements to strengthen or release muscles depending on what is needed.

what is yoga?

The term ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit ‘yujir-yoge’ meaning to join or unite. Yoga actually is the joining of oneself with one’s true nature, unconditional and uninterrupted joy. It also means to unite body, mind and the self. Sage Patanjali, the founder of the yoga system of philosophy, defines yoga as the resolving all modifications of the mind. As well as the benefits for the mind yoga can improve flexibility, strength, balance and posture. Yoga is not just a series of asanas (postures) but is also a spiritual practice – some might say a moving meditation.

Vinyasa Yoga

The style of Yoga that I teach is Vinyasa which is a lovely style of yoga based on breath and movement where we flow smoothly and steadily into asanas (postures). This style of yoga helps to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and includes some balance work and of course a relaxing shavasana!

Yin Yoga

Yin is a beautiful practice which allows us to go inward. Mainly floor based, postures are held for a longer period to go deeper into the connective tissues, bones, ligaments and fascia to nourish these areas and improve mobility and flexibility. Yin includes a meditation and shavasana to help connect to your mind and leave you floating on air.

Yoga Nidra

This is an ancient practice to relax the deepest layers of the body and mind. It is often referred to as psychic sleep and can be used to promote relaxation, positive habits into our subconscious and release emotional blocks. I will be providing audios of Yoga Nidra which you can do in the comfort of your own home. Get in touch for more info and prices.
